7 Hours in a Cave

The seven pages each represent an hour’s time spent staring into a partially-lit cave. The accordion structure lets the sculptural book take on multiple configurations. These follow the flexible visual designs the brain constructs when gazing intently for such a time into rare and magnetic spaces. Here the work is suspended, so that the recto—reliefs of stalactites—and the verso—heavy encaustic references to the flow of mineral waters in caves—are viewed according to the happenstance of the gallery’s air drafts.
