Based on the texture, both grubby and alluring, of the walls of a cave, I made these bas-relief pieces during a residency at Dieu Donne Papermill in NYC. I had made some urethane relief molds in my studio, based on my drawings done in the Frasassi caves. At Dieu Donne I cast the paper in those molds with assistance from Akemi Martin, and I used pigmented flax pulp to create the patina for each piece. My goal for this installation is for the viewer to be enveloped in an underground place of beauty, history and continuing geological process, reflecting the physical reality of the walls of a cave.
